Retrotec is pleased to present John Tooley, who we can thank for many of the concepts we use today to teach building science principles. In 1989, John co-authored and published “Mechanical Air Distribution and Interacting Relationships” (MAD AIR) with Neil Moyer. In this paper, they present their discovery of how mechanical systems are the cause of much of the air infiltration that occurs in residential structures. MAD AIR has been published and available for reference for quite some time now. However, it is just now beginning to make a resurgence as technicians are seeing success with using building science principles to solve comfort and IAQ problems for their customers. One technician we can thank for the resurgence of MAD AIR is Genry Garcia in Miami, FL.
